What Is the GONE Fishing Spider?
A GONE Fishing spider encounter can turn your cabin break into another reason to watch where you step. Spiders matter because they appear in infestation events, connect to other creature encounters, and can also become fishing bait. Before approaching a GONE Fishing spider, distinguish the spiders around your cabin from the Jungle tarantula—and check arachnophobia mode if you want their appearance changed.
GONE Fishing has both a Lake spider and a Jungle tarantula. That distinction matters for accessibility: an earlier implementation of arachnophobia mode overlooked Jungle tarantulas, and a later update added their replacement appearance.
You will also encounter the name Giant Spider. Keep that name separate from assumptions about combat. A large spider does not automatically mean a boss fight, a special reward, or a required progression encounter.
Here are the spider encounters and connections worth recognizing:
| Spider or encounter | Relevant detail |
|---|---|
| Lake spider | One of the game's two spider types identified in its arachnophobia update |
| Jungle tarantula | Receives a Jorts replacement appearance with arachnophobia mode enabled |
| Cabin infestation | An event that fills the cabin with spiders |
| Mimic, also called Imposter | Collapses, releases spiders, and leaves a corpse usable as bait |
The Mimic connection is particularly useful when something resembling another player behaves strangely. This entity waves and hums before collapsing. Its collapse introduces spiders into the encounter, so walking toward the body also means approaching the creatures it releases.
Keep your attention on the whole encounter. The corpse offers bait, but it is only one part of what just appeared around you.

How to Handle a Cabin Spider Infestation
The cabin can fill with spiders during an infestation event. That makes an ordinary trip inside feel very different from collecting a loose bait creature outdoors.

When a GONE Fishing spider infestation starts, avoid stopping in the middle of the cluster to sort equipment. Move away from the gathering spiders before deciding whether to collect bait or continue fishing. This keeps your next action deliberate instead of turning the encounter into frantic inventory scrolling.
Separate these two decisions:
- Collecting bait: Approach an individual spider that you can pick up.
- Dealing with an infestation: Give yourself space from the group before interacting with anything.
- Recovering fish: Prioritize the catch you already need for quota over experimenting with the swarm.
- Changing spider visuals: Use arachnophobia mode through the in-match pause menu.
Do not assume every spider has the same interaction. A spider that can be collected for bait and a cabin full of moving spiders present different situations. Check for a pickup interaction on the creature you are approaching rather than repeatedly trying to grab everything nearby.
Why Older Infestations Could Seem Endless
An earlier bug prevented the spider infestation event from ending. The “Stuff n things” update fixed that issue.
That matters if you remember a cabin that seemed permanently occupied. An infestation that never ended was a bug addressed by an update; it should not become the basis for planning every future run around an unusable cabin.
Keep the game updated before returning to an older save or revisiting strategies built around that behavior. GONE Fishing 1.0 also includes broader stability improvements, with fixes accumulated across earlier patches.
During a run, keep your objective simple: preserve useful catches, avoid unnecessary contact with the cluster, and return to fishing when you have room to act. There is little reason to turn every infestation into an improvised combat experiment.
Can You Use Spiders as Bait or Kill Them?
Image: Steam / GONE Studios
Spiders can be used as fishing bait. A collectible spider can go on your line, turning an unsettling creature encounter into another fishing resource.
For a GONE Fishing spider you can pick up, collect it and select it through your bait menu before casting. With the keyboard controls shown in earlier gameplay, Tab opens the bait menu, where you select the bait you want to equip.
Keep the distinction between collecting and fighting clear. Picking up a usable spider is a different action from killing a creature with a weapon.
What the Musket Changes in Version 1.0
GONE Fishing 1.0 makes the musket part of the creature-to-bait loop. Creatures can be killed and used as bait, with pets excluded.
The musket has an especially important limitation: it fires once, then becomes destroyed and unusable. Its ability to kill most creatures in one shot does not make it a reusable answer to a cabin swarm.
| Musket detail | Version 1.0 behavior |
|---|---|
| Damage capability | Kills most creatures in one shot |
| Number of shots | One shot before the weapon becomes unusable |
| Acquisition | A drop from Skeeter or a map loot spawn |
| Friendly fire | Can kill other players |
| Creature bait | Creatures can be killed and used as bait; pets are excluded |
Keep teammates out of your firing line. Friendly fire is part of the weapon's behavior, so a crowded cabin gives you another reason to avoid a rushed shot.
Choose the Bait Opportunity Before Spending the Weapon
Check whether the spider is already collectible before using a musket. If you can pick it up and equip it as bait, start with that interaction.
Reserve the weapon decision for a creature you actually intend to shoot. Because the musket breaks after firing, every shot consumes the entire weapon.
The Mimic offers another bait opportunity through the corpse it leaves behind. Keep that separate from the spiders released during its collapse: the body and the surrounding creatures are different things to interact with.
Once you have usable bait, return to the fishing loop. Collecting more creatures is only helpful when you still have time to turn those resources into catches.
How to Enable Arachnophobia Mode
If spider visuals are the problem, enable arachnophobia mode before deliberately approaching them. GONE Fishing includes this setting, and its coverage was expanded to include Jungle tarantulas.

The December 2025 interface placed the option inside a match rather than in the main menu's gameplay settings. Use that location when looking for the toggle:
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| Enter a match | Access the in-game interface |
| Open the pause menu | Look for the arachnophobia option |
| Check the bottom-left area | This is where the December 2025 interface placed the setting |
| Enable arachnophobia mode | Turn on the spider replacement visuals |
For Jungle tarantulas, the replacement is Jorts with the exaggerated BBL appearance. That deliberately ridiculous visual fits the game's humor while giving players an alternative to the tarantula model.
The Jungle detail matters because arachnophobia mode initially missed that spider type. An update explicitly added the Jungle tarantula replacement, alongside the fix for endlessly running infestations.
Set It Up Before Exploring
Check the option after entering your match, before heading out to find creatures or investigate another cabin. If spiders are a concern, make accessibility setup part of getting ready alongside collecting your rod and choosing bait.
For a GONE Fishing spider encounter, changing the model can make the visual experience easier to manage. Keep making your gameplay decisions around the encounter itself: an infestation still calls for attention, and a collectible creature still requires an interaction.
Separate appearance preferences from your fishing objective. Enable the setting you need, then concentrate on keeping your catch, selecting bait, and meeting quota.
If you are helping a friend get started, point them toward the in-match pause menu early. Finding the option before a cabin fills with spiders is a much calmer introduction than searching for it during the event.
Keep Spider Encounters From Consuming Your Fishing Day
Spider encounters compete with the same time you need for catching fish, exploring, and managing quota. Build your day around those objectives so an infestation does not become the only thing your group accomplishes.
In version 1.0, traps provide another way to maintain fishing resources. Bait traps collect bait overnight and become harvestable at the start of the morning. Fish traps collect fish overnight after being baited from your tacklebox.
| Trap | What it provides | Relevant mechanic |
|---|---|---|
| Minnow Trap | Bait | Collects bait overnight |
| Crab Trap | Bait | Collects bait overnight |
| Rabbit/Raccoon trap | Bait | Requires care when walking around it |
| Fish Trap | Fish | Uses tacklebox bait; bait value affects the fish collected |
The Fish Trap upgrade is purchased from Jeb and allows a trap to collect up to three fish per bait. Bait traps and fish traps can also appear as map loot when starting a new run.
Use those systems to support your day:
- Harvest ready traps in the morning. Collect the resources produced overnight before leaving them behind.
- Bait your fish traps. Give them the bait needed for their overnight catch.
- Keep your quota objective in view. Avoid sacrificing the day's fishing time to repeated spider experiments.
- Collect convenient spider bait. Take an accessible pickup when it fits your route.
- Check your musket decision before firing. Account for its single shot and nearby teammates.
These steps give a GONE Fishing spider encounter a clear place in the run. It can offer bait, interrupt a cabin visit, or call for an accessibility adjustment without becoming your entire plan.
Version 1.0 also changes progression through eight shared trinkets. Purchasing or upgrading a trinket gives that trinket to your friends as well. Effects include chances for an immediate bite, an instant reel-in, or retaining bait after a catch.
Use shared upgrades alongside traps to support fishing while your group explores. Keep creature encounters purposeful: collect what you can use, protect the catches you already have, and spend the remaining day advancing your run.
FAQ
Can you use a GONE Fishing spider as bait?
Yes. Collectible spiders can be equipped as fishing bait. Pick up a spider that offers the interaction, then select it through the bait menu before casting.
Where is arachnophobia mode in GONE Fishing?
The December 2025 interface places it in the bottom-left area of the pause menu while you are inside a match. Enter a match and check that menu when looking for the option.
What replaces Jungle tarantulas in arachnophobia mode?
Jungle tarantulas appear as Jorts with the exaggerated BBL appearance. This replacement was added after the initial arachnophobia implementation overlooked Jungle tarantulas.
Was the endless spider infestation fixed?
Yes. An update fixed the bug that prevented the spider infestation event from ending. Update the game before returning to a run affected by that older behavior.
